New ICG article published in Carbohydrate Research on the role of glycans in trained immunity

Exciting news!

Pinho’s lab has recently published a review article in the journal Carbohydrate Research focused on the role of glycans in trained immunity.

Trained immunity is an emerging concept in immunology and in this publication, first authored by Pedro Almeida, we highlight its tenets and delve into how glycans and their interactions with glycan-binding proteins (GBPs) influence key immunoregulatory networks in trained immunity. Specifically, in this publication we showcase how distinct glycan structures engage with specific GBPs expressed by innate immune cells across various settings to modify their epigenetics and metabolism, thus priming subsequent responses. Moreover, we also explore the potential of glycans as regulators of trained immunity in the context of infectious, autoimmune and oncological diseases. As such, this work adds an important new layer to the field of trained immunity and advances glycans as relevant players in the development of innate immune memory.
